Why Karl Stefanovic asked Andy Lee a ‘cruel’ question on The Hundred with Andy Lee

0 80

Karl Stefanovic may have been worried about his performance on the series finale of The Hundred with Andy Lee, but at the end of the day the show’s ‘winner’ isn’t determined by how many laughs they get, it’s about who gets the most answers right about statistics.

And the winner gets a huge perk.

Whoever scores the most points out of the three panellists is allowed to ask The Hundred — the 100 Australians who’ve Zoomed in to provide context and backstory to support the stats on the show — a yes/no question of their choice.

As Karl topped the night’s leaderboard, beating comedians Mike Goldstein and Becky Lucas, he was bestowed this power.

“Karl, for the final time this season, what question do you have for The Hundred up there, that as we found out tonight, perfectly represent the cross-section of Australia?” Andy asked.

He should have anticipated the question as soon as a mischievous expression crossed Karl’s face.

“How many of The Hundred,” Karl began, “prefer Hamish than Andy?” He ended his question with a cartoonishly evil laugh.

“Well, we might find out that Hamish is hosting this next year,” Andy said good-naturedly as The Hundred popped in their answers.

“He can’t ask that,” Becky said, coming to Andy’s defence.

“Don’t worry, my mum prefers Hamish,” Andy said.

“Well, it’s a bit cruel, the question, it’s not really me,” Karl told 9Entertainment, reflecting on his big question. “I just thought, Andy has been a friend of mine for a lot of years, but a lot of people have asked me the same question, and I reckon it’s like 50/50, half like Andy, half like… what’s the other guy’s name?” After a beat he added, “See what I did there?

“So I’m intrigued, but it’s definitely cruel, and it was the end so I was feeling like I wanted to be cruel, because Andy had subjected me to many humiliations throughout the course of that show.”

The results came through: 57 per cent of The Hundred said they preferred Hamish Blake to Andy, which was close enough to 50/50.

But this wasn’t the first time Karl stitched up Andy on TV.

Karl’s first appearance on The Hundred was a few weeks ago, but he was the secret celebrity guest, not a panellist. For that role he was also allowed to ask The Hundred any question he wanted, and he used that opportunity to ask whether they thought Andy should propose to his long-term girlfriend, Rebecca Harding.

Luckily Andy had a great attitude about the question, which is due to his and Karl’s friendship.

“It’s definitely a brotherly kind of relationship, and we do love each other. Whenever we’re on air together it turns into one of those really brotherly relationships where you try and bring the other down,” Karl told 9Entertainment.

“I find that kind of fun because my brothers, Pete and Tom, we’ve always had that kind of relationship. On air I think it’s completely and utterly fine to try and break the other person, because he does it to me too. Whilst I think it’s awkward for the viewer sometimes, it’s also delicious for the viewer.”

And really, it’s just the Today co-host getting away with asking something many people have probably also wondered, but have been too nervous to ask because it’s so personal.

“You don’t have to be respectful of Andy! Or Hamish. You can just ask them whatever you want, because they’ve done that over the years, so I think it’s like it’s time for you to get some of the heat back that you’ve dished out over the years,” Karl said with a laugh. “I thought, ‘Righto, this is my moment, to try and get Andy back.’ Yeah, the question is kind of harsh, uncomfortable and awkward, but what question could be better than that?”
