Welcome to Quick Q – Monday Media’s weekly Q&A series dedicated to finding out more about the personalities that matter most in the media landscape.

Every week, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age asks key figures across corporate media, business, sport, federal politics, radio, television and culture to answer questions about their lives, careers, hobbies and news habits.

This week’s conversation is with Senator Mehreen Faruqi, deputy leader of The Greens.

How did you get your big break?
After a decade in Sydney, I got out! I took a role at Port Macquarie Hastings Council. It was
a great place for my kids to grow up and that’s where I got involved in the Greens. The rest
is history.

What are daily news media habits?
If I’m not starting the day giving an interview, I’ll listen to RN and read the papers. I still get
the Herald delivered.

Which living person do you most admire?
Angela Davis. Her unapologetic anti-racist writing and activism have really shaped my
thinking over the years.

Your guilty streaming pleasure?
She-Hulk: Attorney-at-Law. My husband thinks I have superhero aspirations.

Which phrase do you overuse?
“Onwards and upwards”. It’s definitely how I approach life, so it sneaks into a lot of speeches.

What did you want to do when you grew up?
I wanted to be a teacher, actor and captain of the Pakistan cricket team all at once. Never a politician. Such are the twists and turns of life.
