(ZEE) has marked its return into sports broadcasting by signing a 10-year media rights deal with the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) for their upcoming UAE T20 League.

The deal, pegged at around $100-120 million, was signed just after ZEE completed its non-compete for sports with Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN).

“ZEE has acquired the rights of the league for 10 years,” confirmed a highly placed source. “They have committed a telecast on at least 3-4 TV channels and OTT service ZEE5. Once their merger finalises with Sony, UAE T20 matches will also be aired on sports channels of the merged entity.”

ZEE had sold its sports business, TEN Sports, to SPN in 2017 for approximately Rs 2,400 crore and signed a five-year non-compete

clause.

Incidentally, ZEE and SPN are also in the process of finalising a merger, which, as per ZEE’s MD and Punit Goenka, will be a homecoming for the sports business.

“The merged entity will focus on sports. We just finished non-compete in sports with Sony and it’s coming full circle,” Goenka said during his keynote at the APOS Media summit last week.

On sports business, he had said that the opportunity was great. “The digital landscape has opened up new opportunities for monetisation that did not exist five years ago. Certainly, sports will become an area of interest.”

ZEE did not respond to ET’s queries regarding the deal with the ECB.

The UAE T20 League will have six franchises in the beginning. The inaugural edition of the league will have 34 matches across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

The ECB has sold rights of all the six franchises for $40-60 million each, to be paid over 10 years.

Franchise owners include three owners of the Indian Premier League (IPL) – Reliance Industries (owners of Mumbai Indians), Shahrukh Khan (owner of Kolkata Knight Riders) and GMR Group (co-owners of Delhi Capitals).

Other franchise owners include football club Manchester United’s Glazers family and Capri Global – both of whom bid but lost in the recently concluded auction for the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise — and owners of Big Bash League franchise Sydney Sixers.

Unlike the IPL, the Big Bash League, Caribbean Premier League or other similar format leagues, which cap international players in the playing squad at four or five players, the UAE T20 League is likely to allow the maximum number of international players – up to eight – in the playing 11.

Matches will be played at 7 pm India time, which is the prime time for Indian television audiences.
