The trio of Open-Faced Potato Latkes Sandwiches is available at 12 Chairs Café, and there’s also a kosher variation at Sherry Herring, between December 18 and 26. The latkes trio includes Matjes Herring topped with sour cream, onion, scallion and chili, Smoked Tuna with mayonnaise and chipotle paste garnished with Harissa flakes, and smoked whitefish mixed with house veggies and a touch of lemon and olive oil as the base, garnished with chives.

Banana Fritter

In these Banana Fritters from GOLD FINCH in San Diego, the banana is dipped into a batter of flour, eggs and milk, then fried until golden brown in a feuilleté puff pastry. It’s then finished with cinnamon sugar and served with a housemade halvah ice cream and toffee coffee syrup. “My grandmother used to make me the most heavenly banana fritters as a kid, and these ones on the menu are a modern nod to her original recipe,” said Tracy Borkum, owner & principal of Urban Kitchen Group.

Raspberry Guava Jam-Filled Doughnuts

Jelly doughnuts are one of the most symbolic dishes of Hanukkah. Fried, stuffed with a generous portion of raspberry guava jam, and dusted with snow sugar, these DC-based Call Your Mother locations doughnuts scream nostalgia. “These are like the jelly donuts you had during Hanukkah as a kid, but if they went on vacation to see your grandparents in South Florida,” said Call Your Mother Pastry Chef, Jamie Silver.

Available at 8 Crazy Nights, a Hanukkah pop-up bar at The Graystone Tavern in Chicago’s Wrigleyville neighborhood, these are house made, hand-rolled doughnuts infused with a Three Olives Strawberry Vodka jelly and topped with powdered sugar. “Many know that Sufganiyah is a Hanukkah tradition, so we wanted to make our own version for our 8 Crazy Nights pop-up. We infuse the donuts with a Three Olives Strawberry Vodka jelly adding a boozy spin to the traditional dessert. It’s become one of our most popular dishes for groups to share,” said owner Sam Stone.

Apple “Pie” Latke

At One Market Restaurant in San Francisco, this dish is made with sauteed apples, cinnamon sugar, vanilla ice cream on a traditional latke. “We’ve always offered up a Hanukkah menu at One Market but we wanted to think outside the box this year. After a bit of brainstorming, we developed a Festival of Latkes menu featuring eight different takes (in honor of the eight days of Hanukkah) ranging from savory to sweet. Our final latke on the menu is a dessert latke inspired by “apple pie.” Applesauce is already a common accompaniment for latkes, so we thought up an alternative way to showcase the ingredients,” said One Market Chef Mark Dommen. One Market’s Festival of Latkes menu will run from December 1 – December 23 during lunch and dinner service.

Olive Oil & Babka Ice Cream

At Denver-based High Point Creamery, this rich, olive oil ice cream with a traditional chopped up Jewish babka pastry filled with chocolate and a streusel topping is buttery, chocolatey, and delicious. The babka is also available for nationwide shipping. “I developed Olive Oil & Babka as a fundraiser for our local Jewish Community Center. Babka is a chocolate and cinnamon braided pastry. I’d been looking for an excuse to do an Olive Oil based ice cream for a while and this was a perfect pairing. The olive oil adds a depth and richness to our cream and really sets off the babka. This flavor has become so popular that we bring it back every year!” said Erika Thomas, owner of High Point Creamery.
