The Mexican Pizza is finally returning to Taco Bell starting September 15.
Joshua Blanchard/Getty ImagesWhen Taco Bell brought back the Mexican Pizza in May for the first time in two years, fans of the coveted menu item went wild. SFGATE’s own Joshua Bote described the combination of beef and refried beans smushed between two tostada shells and topped with red sauce, tomatoes, green onions and shredded cheese as punching “far above its weight class.” A Change.org petition calling for the return of the Mexican Pizza garnered over 170,000 signatures.
But just as quickly as it reappeared, the Mexican Pizza disappeared again. It sold out quickly as the restaurant reportedly burned through a six-month supply in less than a month.
Fortunately for Mexican Pizza lovers, the wait for the Taco Bell item’s permanent return to the menu is nigh. That much anticipated date is September 15 (and two days earlier for those subscribed to Taco Bell’s in-house rewards program).
Not only will the pizza-like snack make its official comeback, but Taco Bell is also releasing its postponed “Mexican Pizza: the Musical” on TikTok on the same day. The musical features Dolly Parton and Doja Cat, with music written by Grammy-winning musical duo Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear (best known for their Unofficial Bridgerton Musical, which went viral on TikTok).
A sneak peek Taco Bell posted on TikTok of one of the songs from the musical includes the lyrics: “Take away this hunger pang, from now into eternity, because I’ve got you and you’ve got me, and just one slice is all we’ll ever need.”
A little much for a fast food item, perhaps. But maybe the Mexican Pizza is worth the hype.
