Causeway follows Lynsey (Lawrence), who navigates through post-war trauma. Lawrence plays a member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers who was injured while deployed in Afghanistan. The character returns home to New Orleans and is forced to confront her physical and psychological injuries.
The film was directed by Lila Neugebauer, who makes her feature directorial debut with this film. It’s clear that Lawrence had an overwhelmingly positive experience with Neugebauer. Lawrence also shared that “a script doesn’t have to be finished before you start shooting. I mean, it’s certainly easier if it is.”
When it came to producing and starring in a film, Lawrence shared that “there are a lot of jobs and it’s very exhausting but it’s so fulfilling knowing that you’re a part of the entire process – the prep, the shooting and the editing and really having your hands in everything.”
But then when it comes to premiering her movie at the film festival, “as overwhelming and scary as it is, it’s just a totally different feeling than just being an actor and showing up to take pictures,” explained Lawrence.
