A man who shot at another driver during a road rage confrontation on the 91 Freeway pleaded guilty Friday to firearm assault and was immediately sentenced to five years in state prison.

Enrique Campos, 47, of Homeland admitted the felony count under a plea agreement with the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.

In exchange for his admission, prosecutors dropped a charge of shooting at an occupied vehicle, as well as a sentence-enhancing allegation of using a gun in the commission of a felony.

The plea deal was announced just as Campos’ preliminary hearing was slated to get underway at the Riverside Hall of Justice. Superior Court Judge Walter Kubelun certified the terms of the bargain and imposed the sentence stipulated by the prosecution and defense. The conviction counts as a felony strike.

Kubelun also ordered that Campos pay victim restitution in an amount to be determined later by the Department of Probation.

According to the California Highway Patrol, about 11 p.m. last Oct. 6, the defendant was driving his Kia Soul eastbound on the 91 in Corona when he became enraged with another motorist for unknown reasons.

Officer Javier Navarro said that the defendant pulled a handgun and “fired an unknown number of rounds” at the victim, whose identity was not disclosed. The man was not struck by the gunfire.

Navarro said Campos fled, exiting the freeway at McKinley Street.

The victim called 911, and CHP officers initiated a search for the assailant, ultimately confirming the type of sedan he was driving and the license plate — information that was distributed to regional law enforcement agencies, according to Navarro.

He said Chino police officers spotted the vehicle hours later and stopped it on Riverside Drive, where Campos was taken into custody without incident.

He had no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County. However, court records show he did have convictions in another jurisdiction, but the offenses weren’t listed.
