‘That would attract the most interest’

Luis Alberto Lopez is set to move straight from one huge fight to another, as he could fight Michael Conlan next year.

Earlier this month, Lopez caused an upset when, as mandatory challenger, he beat IBF featherweight champion Josh Warrington by majority decision.

Warrington could not get the hang of Lopez’s awkward style

After the fight, Lopez was clearly upset with Warrington, as he had given him a nasty cut in the second round from an accidental headbutt, and the Mexican made it clear that he would not be giving ‘The Leeds Warrior’ a rematch.

“There is not a rematch clause,” Lopez told Izquierdazo Boxeo. “They had other plans, so didn’t put one in.

“I told them to be careful because I like to ruin plans and you can see what happened.

“It’s an honour to show the British that Mexico rules in boxing.”

Lopez added: “He is a very dirty fighter. He doesn’t deserve to be in pro boxing.

“With his fighting style, he can cause an accident to other boxers. He shouldn’t be allowed in boxing.”

Lopez’s next challenge looks like it will come against Conlan (18-1, 9 KO’s)

With that being said, it looks like Lopez’s promoter, Top Rank founder Bob Arum, has plans outside of a Warrington rematch anyway, as he wants to match the current IBF featherweight champion with Irishman Conlan.

When asked about whether he was surprised by Lopez’s excellent performance against Warrington, Arum told talkSPORT: “I have matchmakers at Top Rank who told me that the kid had a hell of a shot with Warrington. I didn’t think so, but he was certainly able to handle him.

“I think now the plan is to put him in with Mick Conlan some time next year…

“I think that’s the fight for Lopez that would attract the most interest on both sides of the pond.”
